Shipping a motorcycle from Peninsular Malaysia to Sarawak or Sabah is the practical option for owners who don't want to risk a 14+ hour ride across the country plus a ferry layover. Whether you're moving for work, joining a Borneo adventure ride, or shipping a newly-bought bike — this is what it actually costs, how long it takes, and how to prepare.
Rentaka has been shipping bikes on the Port Klang corridor since 2023. We move everything from 110cc kapchais to 1800cc Harleys and full-touring BMW GS adventures. The process is similar across all bikes, but the cost and preparation differ.
- 🏍️ Owners shipping a single bike for relocation, sale, or adventure ride
- 🎯 Dealers shipping new units from Peninsular Malaysia to East Malaysian buyers
- 🛵 Anyone moving a scooter or commuter bike along with household relocation
- 🏆 Superbike owners wondering if container shipping is worth the premium
Why Ship Instead of Ride Across?
You technically can ride from KL to Kuching — drive to Port Klang, ferry your bike, then ride. But almost nobody does. The realities:
- ⏰ Time: 4-5 days of riding + ferry queues vs 5-7 days of zero-effort shipping
- 💸 Cost: Fuel, tolls, accommodation, food across the 1,800km route adds up to RM 1,200+ alone — often more than the shipping cost
- 🛣️ Road wear: 1,800km adds significant mileage; on a premium bike that's real depreciation
- ⚠️ Risk: Long-haul motorcycle accidents are statistically the highest-risk leg of any cross-Malaysia trip
- 🧳 Logistics: You can't carry your luggage on the bike easily; shipping lets you fly separately with bags
For most owners, shipping the bike and flying yourself works out to similar total cost — but with zero road risk and far less fatigue.
Motorcycle Shipping Cost (Port Klang → Sarawak / Sabah)
Bike shipping is priced by size class, not weight. The smaller the bike, the cheaper — and small bikes can share container slots with others to keep costs down.
Prices are port-to-port, all-in. Marine cargo insurance, lashing, port handling, and basic documentation are included. Door-to-door pickup and delivery adds RM 250-450 depending on locations.
Routes & Timing from Port Klang
Three primary East Malaysia destinations from Port Klang for motorcycles:
Port Klang → Kuching
- ⏱️ Transit: 4-5 days port-to-port
- 📅 Frequency: 2-3 sailings per week
- 🚢 Vessel type: RORO car carrier with motorcycle deck
- 💰 From RM 1,250 (flat motorcycle rate)
Port Klang → Kota Kinabalu
- ⏱️ Transit: 6-7 days port-to-port
- 📅 Frequency: Weekly sailing
- 🚢 Vessel type: RORO + occasional container
- 💰 From RM 1,250 (flat motorcycle rate)
Port Klang → Bintulu
- ⏱️ Transit: 5-6 days port-to-port
- 📅 Frequency: Weekly via Kuching transhipment
- 🚢 Vessel type: RORO with regional connection
- 💰 From RM 1,650 (flat motorcycle rate)
RORO vs Container for Motorcycles
Most motorcycles ship via RORO (roll-on, roll-off) — the bike is wheeled onto the vessel's motorcycle deck and strapped down. Container shipping is reserved for premium / fragile bikes where the owner wants enclosed protection.
| Factor | RORO | Container |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lower (default) | +30-40% premium |
| Transit time | 5-7 days | 7-10 days |
| Protection level | Indoor deck, strapped | Fully enclosed steel box |
| Salt air exposure | Minimal (interior deck) | None |
| Best for | Daily-use bikes, kapchai, sport | Vintage, restored, RM 80k+ bikes |
| Personal items inside | Not allowed | Allowed (declared) |
For 9 out of 10 owners, RORO is the right choice. Container only makes sense for bikes worth RM 80,000+ or with concours-grade paint that can't risk any cosmetic exposure.
Pre-Shipment Preparation Checklist
Bring your bike to our yard ready to load. Following this checklist prevents loading delays and reduces insurance claim risk.
Fuel & Battery
- ⛽ Fuel level: 1/4 tank or less — safety requirement for vessel loading; we won't accept full tanks
- 🔋 Battery: fully charged or disconnected — if you're shipping a battery-tender-required bike (Ducati, premium BMW), disconnect the negative terminal
- 🛢️ Oil and coolant: at normal levels — no leaks, no fresh service the same day (let it settle)
Loose Items & Accessories
- 📦 Remove or secure loose items: dash cams, GPS units, removable luggage, top boxes
- 🪞 Fold mirrors — saves deck space and prevents catching on adjacent bikes
- 🔑 Provide one key — you keep the spare; we return our key at delivery
- 🎒 No personal items in storage compartments — RORO regulations prohibit anything not part of the bike
Documentation Photos
- 📸 Take your own walk-around photos at handover — every side, plus odometer reading, plus VIN/engine number
- 📋 Note existing damage on the inspection form before signing
Documents Required for Motorcycle Shipping
You'll need to provide these documents at handover. Rentaka handles the rest of the paperwork (Bill of Lading, customs).
Original or certified copy. Must match the registered owner name.
Photocopy front and back. Authorisation letter required if shipping someone else's bike.
Must be valid for the destination state. Your insurance must remain active during transit.
We send this electronically once your quote is confirmed. Sign and return.
Pickup & Delivery Options
Three service levels depending on convenience vs cost:
- 01
Port-to-Port (P2P)
Cheapest option. You ride or trailer the bike to our Klang yard, and collect at Kuching/KK port on arrival. Saves RM 250-450 vs door-to-door but requires your time at both ends.
- 02
Door-to-Port
We pickup from your home/workshop in Klang Valley (KL, Selangor, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya) and deliver to the destination port. You collect there. Mid-tier convenience.
- 03
Door-to-Door (D2D)
Full service. Pickup from your origin address, delivery to destination address (Kuching city, KK city, Sibu, Miri, Bintulu, Sandakan, Tawau). Zero effort on your part. Most popular for relocations.
Insurance for Motorcycle Shipping
Every Rentaka motorcycle shipment includes ICC(A) all-risk marine cargo insurance by default, covering damage during loading, transit, and discharge. The premium is folded into your quote — no separate line item.
For premium motorcycles (anything above RM 80,000 declared value), we recommend the enhanced cover option which reduces excess from RM 500 to RM 250 and speeds up claim settlement. Read the full marine cargo insurance guide for details.
Realistic End-to-End Timeline
From the moment you confirm booking to your bike arriving in your hands at destination:
| Phase | Duration |
|---|---|
| Booking confirmation → Pickup scheduled | 1-2 days |
| Pickup → Klang yard arrival | Same day |
| Yard inspection & documentation | Same day |
| Yard → Loaded onto vessel | 1-3 days (next sailing) |
| Port Klang → Destination port (sea transit) | 4-7 days |
| Port arrival → Discharge ready for collection | Same day |
| Collection or door delivery | 0-1 day |
| Total: Booking → Bike in your hands | 7-12 days |
The single biggest variable is the gap between yard arrival and next sailing. Booking 5-7 days in advance gives flexibility to catch the next available departure.
FAQ
1. Can I ship multiple bikes together?
Yes. Two or three bikes from the same pickup to the same destination ship together at a grouped rate — typically 15-20% saving per bike vs individual shipments. Common for adventure clubs, family relocations, and dealers.
2. Do I need to disconnect the battery?
For most bikes, no — a healthy battery survives 7-10 days fine. For bikes with battery-tender-required charging systems (some BMWs, Ducatis, premium Honda models), disconnect the negative terminal at handover. We can re-connect on delivery.
3. What if my bike doesn't run?
Non-running bikes require container shipping (so we can push-load them) — not RORO. Add 30-40% premium vs standard RORO rate. We accept all non-running bikes as long as they roll freely.
4. Can I leave my helmet and jacket on the bike?
No. RORO regulations prohibit personal items in or on the bike. Container shipping allows declared personal items but they must be listed on the customs form. Most owners ship gear separately as airline luggage.
5. Will my bike's battery drain during transit?
A healthy battery loses about 1-2% charge per day. A 7-day transit drops a fresh battery by ~10% — well within normal range. If your battery is already weak before shipping, replace it before booking.
6. How do I track my motorcycle during shipping?
Rentaka provides a tracking reference at booking. You can check status via our tracking page or WhatsApp our team for live updates. We notify you at vessel departure and arrival.
