Bintulu is the energy capital of Sarawak — home to Malaysia LNG, Bintulu Port Authority, and a population that swells with every project cycle. If you're moving there — for a Petronas posting, family relocation, contractor assignment, or new lease — shipping your car beats the 26-hour drive plus ferry queue every time.
The good news: Rentaka ships to Bintulu weekly from Port Klang. The route uses standard RORO sailings with a Kuching transhipment, or for premium cargo, a direct container charter. Either way, your car arrives in 6-8 days from booking — and you fly there.

Port Klang → Bintulu Route Overview
Bintulu sits on Sarawak's central coast — 600km north of Kuching and 200km south of Miri. The port is at Tanjung Kidurong, one of Malaysia's largest export terminals (LNG, palm oil, timber). Vehicle import handling shares this terminal but uses a dedicated RORO berth.
There are two practical ways your car reaches Bintulu from Port Klang:
- 01
Direct RORO (when available)
Some vessel rotations run Port Klang → Bintulu direct, skipping Kuching. Faster (6 days), but sailings are less frequent (every 10-14 days). Best for time-sensitive Petronas relocations and dealer deliveries.
- 02
Klang → Kuching → Bintulu (most common)
Standard route. Your vehicle ships to Kuching first (4-5 days), waits 1-2 days, then transhipped to a Bintulu-bound feeder vessel (1-2 days). Total transit: 7-9 days. More frequent — weekly capacity available.
Why Ship Instead of Driving?
Driving from Klang Valley to Bintulu requires the longest single-vehicle journey in Malaysia:
- 🚗 Drive Klang → Johor Bahru → Singapore → Tuas → Indonesia ferry → Pontianak → Sarawak overland → Kuching → Bintulu — only available via 2 international borders and 1,800km+ road plus international ferry
- ⏰ Time: 4-6 days of driving + border processing + ferry waiting time
- 📋 Documentation: ICP, customs, multiple passport stamps, vehicle import declarations
- 💰 Cost: Easily RM 3,000+ in fuel + accommodation + ferry + insurance vs RM 2,500 shipping
There is no domestic Malaysian land route to Bintulu. The country is split by sea between Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. Shipping is the only practical option — and Rentaka is the corridor specialist for this exact reason.
Bintulu Shipping Cost Breakdown
Bintulu is slightly more expensive than Kuching due to the transhipment leg (or, on direct sailings, the lower vessel frequency premium). Here's the breakdown by vehicle type:
| Vehicle Type | Rate · RORO one-way |
|---|---|
| Motorcycle | 1,650 |
| Sedan / Hatchback | 2,500 |
| SUV / MPV (Commercial) | 2,600 |
All prices include: Allianz Marine all-risk insurance, lashing, port handling, customs documentation, and our handover inspection. Rates are port-to-port (RORO one-way) — door-to-door pickup from the Peninsular +RM 250. For pickup trucks, vans, or premium cars, check with our officer. Road tax must be current at your end.

- 🏠 Family joining: Spouse already in Bintulu; family ships household vehicle when school year aligns
- 🔄 End-of-contract return: Family ships back to Peninsular when contract ends
- 📦 Multi-vehicle households: 2 cars + sometimes a motorcycle, shipped together
Documents Required for Bintulu Shipping
Documents are the same as all East Malaysia routes — Bintulu doesn't have special requirements beyond standard Sarawak customs:
Original or certified copy. Owner's name must match shipper.
Photocopy front and back. Authorisation letter if shipper ≠ owner.
Both must be valid throughout the transit period.
Signed booking authorising us to ship and customs-clear the vehicle on your behalf.
Insurance Included by Default
Every Bintulu shipment includes ICC(A) all-risk marine cargo insurance. The premium covers loading, transit, transhipment at Kuching (if applicable), and discharge at Bintulu. The insurance window is "warehouse-to-warehouse" — from our Klang yard to your Bintulu delivery address.
For full details on what marine insurance covers and the 24-hour claim window, read the dedicated marine cargo insurance guide.
FAQ
1. Is there really no road route to Bintulu from Peninsular?
No domestic Malaysian land route. Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo are separated by the South China Sea. The only land options involve crossing Singapore, ferrying to Indonesian Kalimantan, then crossing the Indonesia-Malaysia border into Sarawak — adding international paperwork, multiple borders, and 4-6 days. Shipping is the practical option.
2. Can I track my vehicle during transhipment in Kuching?
Yes. Our tracking system shows status at every leg: Klang departure, Kuching arrival, Kuching departure (transhipped), Bintulu arrival, ready for collection. WhatsApp updates available on request.
3. Is direct sailing always available, or only sometimes?
Direct Klang → Bintulu sailings run roughly every 10-14 days depending on vessel rotation. For most shipments, the Kuching-transhipment route is what we book — it's more frequent and total transit time only adds 2-3 days. We let you know at quote time which option is available for your dates.
4. What about Miri or Sibu — do you ship there too?
Yes. Sibu and Miri use the same Kuching-transhipment route. Sibu is roughly 200km south of Bintulu and Miri is 200km north — rates for these destinations are on request, so check with our officer. Tell us your destination at quote stage and we route accordingly.
5. How do I pay — upfront or on delivery?
Standard split: 50% deposit at booking confirmation (locks the sailing slot), 50% balance before discharge at Bintulu. We accept bank transfer, ToyyibPay, and corporate purchase orders for Petronas / approved entities.
6. What happens if my flight to Bintulu is delayed?
No problem — your car can stay safely at our Bintulu agent's yard for up to 7 days at no charge. Beyond that, a daily storage fee applies — check with our officer for the rate. We work around your actual arrival date, not the original schedule.
