The cost to ship a car to Kuching depends on the vehicle type and the origin port. From Port Klang, RORO to Kuching sails to Bintulu and continues by road — a sedan starts from RM2,450, an SUV RM2,580 and a motorcycle RM1,390. These prices cover sea freight only — Marine Insurance is calculated separately from the vehicle's Insured Value, and the final rate is locked after assessment.
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car to Kuching?
The cost of shipping a car to Kuching depends on the vehicle type and the departure port. For a sedan from Port Klang to Kuching (RORO via Bintulu, then by road), the cost is RM2,450. For an SUV, it is RM2,580. If you're shipping a motorcycle, it is RM1,390.
The prices above are for the standard Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO) service. Heavy or commercial vehicles use different rates — request a quote for details. We don't hide any extra charges; every price is locked after assessment.
Comparing with shipping from Sabah? The Kota Kinabalu ⇄ Kuching lane has its own rate in the Sabah ⇄ Sarawak table on our rates page. The second option to Kuching is a container, which sails direct and starts from RM2,750 for a regular car. Get your official quote on our quote page.
What Factors Affect the Price of Shipping a Car?
The base price depends on the type and size of the vehicle — a sedan is smaller than an SUV, so it takes up different space on the vessel. Origin port: Port Klang (Northport/Westports) is the main route from Peninsular Malaysia. From Sabah, the Kota Kinabalu ⇄ Kuching lane has its own rate.
Shipping method: our standard option is RORO — the vehicle is driven onto the vessel, safely and efficiently. Marine Insurance (mandatory for every vehicle) is calculated separately from the Insured Value, and door-to-door delivery is quoted separately. Schedule changes or express shipping requests can also affect the price. Contact us for full details through our quote form.
Marine Insurance — What's Included and What Isn't
The rates above cover sea freight. Marine Insurance is calculated separately, and it isn't an attempt to add a charge: the premium is set by your vehicle's Insured Value, so a ten-year-old Myvi and a new-model SUV on the same sailing don't pay the same amount. That is why nobody can give you a realistic insurance figure before you state the vehicle's value.
Cover is written on Institute Cargo Clauses (A) terms — all risks. It isn't required by law, but we require it for every vehicle we handle, and the marine carrier needs it for its own indemnity.
The most common mistake: assuming cover starts after you've had time to check the car at home. In fact the clock starts at handover — damage must be reported with photos within 24 hours of receiving the vehicle in Kuching. So don't sign the collection form first and check later; walk around the car on the spot, compare it with the pre-shipment inspection photos, and note anything new before you sign. There is a standard excess, so a light scratch may not be worth claiming while a respray usually is. Full details are in our marine cargo insurance guide.
How to Compare Two Quotes to Kuching
Two quotes for the same car can show different figures without either being wrong. Here's what actually moves the number:
- Port Klang terminal. Northport and Westports have separate rates even though both go to Kuching. The sailing offered to you changes the total; the breakdown is in the full rate table.
- RORO via Bintulu or direct container. RORO to Kuching is now routed through Bintulu (then by road), while containers sail direct to Kuching. Both end in Kuching, but the rates differ — so ask which method you've been quoted.
- Origin port. From Peninsular Malaysia, from Kota Kinabalu, or from Bintulu — three entirely different tariffs for the same destination.
- Vehicle class. Rates are split into bands: motorcycle, sedan/hatchback, SUV/MPV/4x4. A vehicle on the edge of a band is better confirmed than guessed.
- Port-to-port or door-to-door. Port-to-port stops at the port gate. Door-to-door adds a collection leg in the Peninsula and a delivery leg in Sarawak, and those legs are priced by your location. The full comparison is in door-to-door vs port-to-port.
- Vehicle condition. A non-running vehicle needs lifting equipment and extra labour at both ends, and is quoted separately.
Compare line by line, not just the headline number: Marine Insurance in or out, collection leg in or out, RORO via Bintulu or direct container. Our written quote states all of this clearly — if another quote doesn't, that is an answer in itself.

How Long Does It Take to Ship a Car to Kuching?
Shipping from Peninsular Malaysia to Kuching usually takes 10–14 days end to end, including documentation, loading and customs clearance — RORO now sails to Bintulu and continues by road. For heavy vehicles, the estimated transit is 15–25 days.
Sailing dates to Kuching are subject to the current sailing schedule; check the Sarawak shipping schedule for the latest dates. Book at least two weeks before your preferred date to avoid delays.
The monsoon season between November and March may slow sea travel, but the effect on modern RORO vessels is minimal. We notify customers of any change immediately.
Documents Required to Ship a Car to Sarawak
Important documents must be prepared before shipping. According to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, these include:
- Vehicle grant (original registration)
- A copy of the owner's identity card
- Export customs form (submitted at the port)
- JPJ authorisation letter if the vehicle is still under hire-purchase
If the vehicle is shipped from Sabah to Sarawak or the other way round, the requirements are similar because both states sit in the same Customs Area (East Malaysia). Puspakom may be required if the vehicle exceeds a certain age — check the current requirements with Puspakom.
We help prepare these documents as part of the service package. Our logistics team will advise you in detail once you've made a booking.
If the car is still under a loan, start with the bank letter. A vehicle under hire-purchase needs a release letter from the bank permitting the vehicle to be moved. Contact your bank's hire-purchase department and have the loan account number, plate number, model, and destination (Kuching) ready. Banks generally issue the letter as long as your loan account isn't in arrears; some send it by email, others require collection at a branch.
The two most expensive mistakes: locking in the sailing date first and applying for the letter later, and assuming we can apply on your behalf — the application must come from the registered owner. Apply for the letter first, then lock in the slot. The full steps are in our shipping a financed car guide.

Risks & Delays: What You Should Know
Delays happen, usually for reasons no one controls. The monsoon and rough seas can push sailings back, vessel schedules change at short notice, and port congestion slows unloading. Incomplete paperwork — especially the bank release letter for a financed vehicle — holds up clearance at the destination port.
To reduce that risk: book early around festive peaks, arrange the bank release letter in advance, and declare any added accessories at inspection. Our rates are port to port and exclude Marine Insurance — Marine Insurance is what covers your cargo's value in transit. We never promise a guaranteed arrival date; in transit, risk stays with the vehicle owner unless Marine Insurance is in place.
FAQ
Does the cost to ship a car to Kuching include insurance?
No. Our base cost covers sea freight only. Marine Insurance is mandatory for every vehicle we ship and is calculated separately from your vehicle's Insured Value — the premium is stated in your written quote.
Can I ship a motorcycle together with a car?
Yes, motorcycles can be shipped in the same booking. The motorcycle rate is RM1,390 from the Peninsula to Kuching (RORO via Bintulu). There is enough space on the vessel.
What if my car is damaged in transit?
Damage incidents are very rare on RORO vessels. Every vehicle ships with mandatory Marine Insurance, so damage is claimed under that policy — report it with photos within 24 hours of receiving the vehicle, and we will help with the claim process.
Does shipping to Kuching include delivery to my home?
Door-to-door delivery is an additional service. Please state this requirement when requesting a quote so it is included in your quote.
