Door-to-door (D2D) and port-to-port (P2P) are the two service models offered for cross-Malaysia car shipping. The route is the same — Port Klang to East Malaysia or vice versa. The difference is who moves the car for the first and last miles, and how much that convenience costs.
This guide breaks down exactly what each option includes, the real cost gap, the time you'd save vs spend, and a clear framework for choosing. We use both models routinely at Rentaka and recommend each for different situations.
- 🤔 First-time shippers comparing the two service levels for the first time
- 💼 Relocators weighing time savings vs RM 400-500 service premium
- 📍 Anyone in KL Valley wondering if it's worth driving to Port Klang themselves
- 🚗 Customers with non-running vehicles needing transport to the port
What is Door-to-Door (D2D) Shipping?
Door-to-door means we collect the vehicle from your address and deliver it to your destination address. From your perspective, you hand over keys and meet the car again at the other end — no port visits, no scheduling around vessel cutoffs, no tow truck arrangement.
The service covers everything in between: collection by our tow truck, transport to our Klang yard, inspection, vessel booking, sea transit, discharge at destination port, customs clearance, and the final delivery leg by our East Malaysia partner. All wrapped into one quote, one booking, one phone number.
What D2D Includes
- ✅ Tow truck pickup from your origin address (KL, Selangor, Putrajaya, JB, Penang)
- ✅ Transport to Klang yard within hours
- ✅ Pre-shipping inspection, photos, and documentation
- ✅ Vessel booking and loading
- ✅ Sea transit + marine cargo insurance
- ✅ Discharge and customs clearance at destination
- ✅ Final delivery to your destination address
What is Port-to-Port (P2P) Shipping?
Port-to-port is the leaner service: we handle everything inside the ports, but you handle the first and last legs. You deliver the car to our Klang yard yourself (or arrange your own tow truck), and someone collects it at the destination port on arrival.
The middle part — the part most people are paying for — is identical between D2D and P2P. The vessel, the insurance, the documentation, the handling at both ports. P2P just removes the road-transport bookend.
What P2P Includes
- ✅ Receive vehicle at Klang yard (you bring it)
- ✅ Inspection, photos, documentation
- ✅ Vessel booking and loading
- ✅ Sea transit + marine cargo insurance
- ✅ Discharge and customs clearance at destination
- ❌ You arrange origin tow truck (or drive it yourself)
- ❌ You arrange destination collection from the port
Cost Difference: How Much Does D2D Add?
The premium is reasonable — door-to-door pickup starts at +RM 250, depending on origin and destination distance from the respective ports. For an exact rate, check with our officer.
The premium varies because: (a) further pickup distances from Klang cost more in tow truck fuel/time, and (b) destination distance from the port varies. Bintulu / Sibu / Sandakan have slightly higher D2D premiums due to longer onward distances.
Time Difference: What Are You Saving?
The time difference is real but smaller than people expect. The sea transit and yard processing are identical — D2D vs P2P only affects the moments you personally spend on the shipment.
| Activity | D2D · Your time | P2P · Your time |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-shipment phone calls / quote | ~15 min | ~15 min |
| Vehicle handover at your driveway | ~10 min | — |
| Drive to Klang yard | — | 1.5-2 hours |
| Yard handover & documentation | — | ~30 min |
| Return trip from Klang | — | 1.5-2 hours |
| Origin-side: tow truck arrangement | (included) | ~30 min if non-running |
| Destination collection | ~10 min (at your address) | 2-3 hours (port + return) |
| Total time investment | ~35 minutes | 5-7 hours |
For someone whose hourly value of time is RM 60+ (which is most working adults), the D2D premium pays for itself. For students, retirees, or anyone who values doing it themselves, P2P is a perfectly reasonable choice.
Who Handles Each Leg
Visualising the chain of custody helps clarify what's included:
- 01
Origin Pickup Leg
D2D: Rentaka tow truck driver collects from your address.
P2P: You drive (or arrange your own tow truck) to the Klang yard. We give you the address and gate code. - 02
Klang Yard → Vessel Loading
Both: Rentaka handles inspection, documentation, vessel booking, and stevedore handover. Identical process.
- 03
Sea Transit + Customs
Both: Same vessel, same insurance, same customs broker at destination. Identical process.
- 04
Destination Delivery Leg
D2D: Our Sarawak/Sabah partner delivers to your address.
P2P: You collect from the destination port directly.
D2D Pickup Procedure (What Actually Happens)
On the agreed pickup day, our driver calls you ~30 minutes before arrival. They show up with a flatbed tow truck or rolling carrier. The process at your address:
- 📋 Walk-around inspection — driver checks vehicle condition, takes ~12 photos, notes any pre-existing damage on a form
- ✍️ Handover form signed — both you and the driver sign; you keep one copy, we keep one
- 🔑 Keys transferred — give us one key; keep your spare
- 📸 Take your own photos — recommended; covers you in any future claim
- 🚛 Loaded onto carrier — vehicle driven or winched onto flatbed
- ⏰ Departure — typically 30-45 minutes total at your address
P2P Drop-off Procedure
If you choose P2P, here's what to expect at the Klang yard:
- 📅 Pre-scheduled appointment — we book you a specific slot to avoid wait times
- 📍 Yard location: Westport, Pulau Indah area (we send precise pin via WhatsApp)
- 🕐 Time required: 30-45 minutes for inspection + documentation
- 📋 Same inspection as D2D — photos, condition notes, signed handover form
- 🔑 Keys handed over — single key, you keep spare
- 🚗 Return transport: arrange your own ride back — Grab, friend, or another driver who came with you
Insurance Across Both Service Levels
Both D2D and P2P include the same ICC(A) all-risk marine cargo insurance for the sea transit. The only difference is the road-transport legs:
- 🛣️ D2D origin leg: Covered under Rentaka's commercial road transport insurance from the moment we load at your address
- 🛣️ P2P origin leg: Your own auto comprehensive policy covers the drive to Klang yard
- ⚓ Sea transit (both): Marine cargo ICC(A) — included by default
- 🛣️ D2D destination leg: Covered under our partner's commercial road transport insurance
- 🛣️ P2P destination leg: Your own auto comprehensive covers the drive from the port
Net effect: insurance coverage is continuous and full in either scenario. No gaps. The only thing that changes is whose policy is paying for which leg.
When to Choose D2D
Choose D2D if any of these apply
- ✅ You're relocating to East Malaysia and won't have transport at destination on day one
- ✅ Your vehicle is non-running (broken down, project car) — you need transport to the port anyway
- ✅ Your origin is more than 50km from Port Klang (Penang, Ipoh, JB)
- ✅ You're booking for a family member who can't physically deliver the car
- ✅ You value your time at over RM 60/hour — the math works in your favour
- ✅ You're shipping a premium vehicle and want professional handling at every step
D2D is what ~70% of Rentaka customers book. The convenience-to-cost ratio is strong.
When to Choose P2P
Choose P2P if any of these apply
- ✅ You live within Klang Valley and can drive to the yard easily
- ✅ You have family/colleagues at the destination who can collect from the port
- ✅ You're budget-sensitive and the RM 400 saving is meaningful
- ✅ You want to inspect the vehicle yourself at the yard before vessel loading
- ✅ You're a logistics-savvy shipper handling multiple vehicles routinely (dealer, fleet)
P2P is the right call for ~30% of shipments — particularly local KL Valley customers and dealers.
FAQ
1. Can I mix — D2D pickup but P2P collection?
Yes. We call this "door-to-port" or "port-to-door" depending on direction. Pricing splits roughly half each premium. Common scenario: you're in Penang (D2D pickup needed) but your brother in Kuching can collect (P2P destination).
2. What if my pickup address has narrow access?
Tell us at quote stage. If our flatbed can't enter (very narrow lane, low entrance), we'll arrange a smaller tow truck that loads at the nearest accessible point. Usually no additional charge in Klang Valley; some marginal locations may add RM 50.
3. Is the D2D driver insured? What if they damage my driveway?
All Rentaka and partner tow truck operators carry commercial vehicle and public liability insurance. Driveway damage (very rare) is covered up to RM 50,000. We've never had a claim — our drivers are professionals.
4. Can I do D2D origin but pick up from port myself?
Yes — that's the "door-to-port" service. Premium is about RM 200-250 vs the RM 400 full D2D. You handle destination collection yourself, saving on the East Malaysia delivery leg.
5. How early do I book for D2D vs P2P?
Both: ideally 7-10 days before desired sailing. D2D needs an extra 1-2 days for scheduling the pickup. Last-minute (1-3 days) is possible for P2P; difficult for D2D unless we have a tow truck in your area.
6. Does D2D guarantee a specific delivery date?
We give a 2-3 day window — sea transit timing depends on vessel schedules. We confirm the final delivery date 24 hours before arrival, and the East Malaysia delivery typically happens same-day or next-day after the vessel arrives.
