What Is RoRo and Why Is It the Best Option for Sabah?
RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) is a shipping method where the vehicle is driven straight onto the vessel via a ramp. It’s safe, fast, and usually cheaper than container shipping.
For Sabah, we use the RORO service out of Northport (Port Klang) or Westports. These vessels are purpose-built for vehicles, so the risk of damage or scratches is very low.
- No need to crate the car or load it into a container
- Faster loading and unloading times
- Lower cost because we don’t charge for container space
- High sailing frequency to Kota Kinabalu
This is the go-to choice for car dealers, investors, or anyone who wants to move a vehicle to Sabah cost-effectively.
How Long Does It Take to Ship a Car to Sabah?
A typical sedan or SUV takes around 10–14 days from port to port. Heavy or commercial vehicles may need an extra 15–25 days because the unloading process is more complex.
This timeline does not include customs clearance in Sabah, which usually takes 1–2 working days. For current sailing schedules, please refer to the latest vessel schedule—the same vessels also serve the Sabah route.
During festive seasons such as Kaamatan (May–June) or Hari Raya Aidiladha, ports can get busier. We recommend booking early to avoid unwanted delays.
What Documents Do You Need Before Shipping?
Before your car can be loaded onto the vessel, make sure these documents are complete. All copies need to be photostated and certified if requested by customs.
- Original vehicle grant – valid proof of ownership
- Owner’s identity card – for verification purposes
- Insurance cover note – temporary Sabah coverage if required
- Customs Form No. 1 or K2 – for customs duty clearance (please refer to customs.gov.my)
- JPJ registration check copy – confirmation that the vehicle status is active (jpj.gov.my)
A Puspakom inspection may be required if the vehicle is being transferred from the Peninsula to Sabah as a permanent change of ownership. Please check the latest requirements at puspakom.com.my.

FAQ
Can I ship a modified car?
Yes, as long as the vehicle complies with JPJ regulations and can be driven onto the RORO vessel. Engine modifications or bodykits may require additional Puspakom certification. Refer to [jpj.gov.my](http://jpj.gov.my) for technical specifications.
Is insurance included in the shipping rate?
Our port-to-port rate does **not** include marine insurance. We can recommend an insurance broker for full coverage during transit, or you can purchase coverage yourself.
What happens if there is damage during shipping?
All vehicles are professionally lashed during the RORO voyage. In the event of an unusual incident, the claims process depends on the marine insurance policy you choose. We assist with the required documentation.
Does shipping stop during the Kaamatan or Gawai season?
RORO vessels operate year-round. However, demand rises in May–June (Kaamatan) and can cause minor customs delays. We recommend booking early and monitoring official announcements from [mot.gov.my](http://mot.gov.my) for travel advisories.
