Buying Online or Through a Dealer — Any Difference?
From the shipping side, none at all. Whether you buy from a dealer in Puchong, meet a private seller in Johor, or close the whole deal through a marketplace without ever meeting anyone face to face, the process is identical. Only two things genuinely matter: correct ownership — transfer completed for a used car, or registration in your name via the dealer for a new one — and where the car physically is on pickup day.
The location isn't a problem. Give us the seller's address or the dealer's lot in the Peninsular plus your destination in Sabah/Sarawak, and we collect from there. You don't need to drive the car anywhere, and you certainly don't need to fly over just to hand it across.
Plenty of dealers are already used to this and arrange the shipping directly with us on the customer's behalf. If that's easier for you, just say so to your dealer — we regularly work with the buyer and the dealer on the same shipment, and it makes no difference to us which of you gets in touch first.

Sequencing the Dates: Paperwork First, Vessel Second
Most buyers make the same mistake. The moment they find the right unit, the first question out is "when's the next sailing?" — when what actually governs your date isn't the vessel, it's the paperwork. Get the order right and everything else falls into place.

A 50% deposit locks the vessel slot; the balance is settled before discharge at the destination. After this your date is firm — so don't arrive here with documents still hanging.
From there our side takes over: pickup, 1-3 days at the Klang yard waiting on the sailing, the RORO crossing, customs clearance, and delivery — 10–14 days end to end from booking to arrival. Bear in mind sailing schedules are fixed: we can prioritise the yard stages if you flag "urgent" at quotation, but nobody can make a vessel leave early.
Ownership & Documents
The most important thing when buying (especially a used car) is correct ownership. Complete the ownership transfer with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) so the registration is in your name before shipping — this avoids complications at the port. The shipping documents are the usual set; see the document checklist.
No re-registration needed in Sabah/Sarawak — a Malaysian plate is valid nationwide. Moving a car to Borneo is a domestic move, not an import.
"Domestic" doesn't mean unchecked, though. Customs clearance is still required because Sabah and Sarawak sit in separate customs zones, and our destination-side broker reviews the Bill of Lading, the ownership documents, and road tax and insurance before the vehicle is released. That's where a name mismatch becomes a problem — a long way from you, at the exact moment you least want to be dealing with it.
The case that catches buyers most often: the car has to be collected from the seller's house or a dealer's lot, but the transfer isn't fully done. If the person shipping isn't the registered owner, include an authorisation letter from the registered owner along with a copy of their IC. Beyond that the document set is the same as any shipment — registration (original or certified copy), IC copy, road tax and motor insurance valid through the whole transit (the car gets driven around the port and up and down the ship's ramp), and the Rentaka booking form that authorises us to ship and clear customs on your behalf.
Handover & Inspection — How You Know What You Bought
This is the real worry for anyone buying at a distance: you've bought a car you've never touched, and the first person to properly look it over may well be our driver. The good news is that the shipping process itself generates a fairly forensic condition record — as long as you know when to read it.
- 🔧 Before pickup: ask the seller or dealer to bring fuel down to 1/4 tank or less, wash the car so the inspection is accurate, and clear all personal items out of the interior and boot.
- 🚛 At the pickup location: a walk-around inspection, roughly 12 photos, a condition form filled in and signed by both parties, and one key handed to our driver.
- 📸 At the Klang yard, within 24 hours of arrival: the full inspection — around 16-20 photos covering all four corners, every panel, the undercarriage, engine bay, interior, odometer reading, VIN plate and engine number, plus a detailed condition form noting every existing scratch and dent. The complete report is emailed to you within 24 hours.
For a remote buyer, that Step 6 report is usually the first time you genuinely see your car. Spend a few minutes holding it up against what the seller advertised — the odometer reading, the paint condition, the angles that never appeared in the listing photos. If something's off, far better to find out while the car is still sitting in Klang.
At the far end, compare the car against those inspection photos before you sign for it. Any damage must be reported within 24 hours of collection or delivery — after that the insurer assumes it happened post-delivery and the claim fails. Have the photo email open on your phone during the walk-around; it's the easiest way to do this properly.

For cash-flow planning there are three things to budget for beyond the price of the car itself. First, the payment structure: a 50% deposit at booking, with the balance settled before the vessel discharges at the destination. Second, Marine Insurance, billed separately and calculated on your vehicle's Insured Value — it is not part of the shipping rate. Third, the service level you choose.
That last one is usually the most relevant decision for a buyer. If our driver collects the car straight from the seller's house or the dealer's lot, you never have to travel to the Peninsular at all. If you happen to be there anyway, you can drive it to our Klang yard yourself.
