Sabah is a sea route, not a road one. Nothing drives from Peninsular Malaysia to Kota Kinabalu, so whether you are moving one car, a motorcycle, or a pallet of stock, it goes across the South China Sea on a vessel out of Port Klang. This guide covers what that costs, how long it takes, which Sabah ports we actually price, and — just as important — which ones we deliberately do not put a number against.

🚢What is sea freight to Sabah?

Sea freight to Sabah means moving vehicles or cargo by vessel from Peninsular Malaysia — in practice from Port Klang — to a Sabah port. It is a domestic movement inside Malaysia, so there are no import duties, but Sabah is a separate customs zone, which is why a declaration still gets raised for every shipment.

Two loading methods cover almost everything we carry:

• ✅ RORO (roll-on/roll-off) — the vehicle is driven up the ramp and lashed down on the car deck. This is how cars, motorcycles and running commercial vehicles travel. New to the term? Start with what RORO shipping actually is.
• ✅ Container — goods are stuffed into a shared container (LCL, billed by CBM) or a whole one (FCL). This is the route for household goods, business stock, machinery parts and non-running vehicles.

Which one you need is usually decided for you by what you are shipping. A running car goes RORO; a pallet of inventory goes LCL. The awkward cases — a non-running car, an oversized machine, a car plus a household's worth of boxes — are worth a phone call rather than a form.

Port Klang → Kota Kinabalu, by loading terminal

Port Klang has two terminals we load from, and they do not price the same. Northport is cheaper for cars and SUVs; Westports is cheaper for motorcycles. The "from" column is simply the lower of the two — which terminal you actually sail from depends on the vessel with the nearest suitable slot.

Sabah ports — published vehicle rates

Kota Kinabalu is the only Sabah port we publish a rate card for. Sandakan and Tawau are served, but their pricing depends on the sailing and on whether the leg transships, so they are quoted per shipment.

Pickups, vans and lorries

These are quoted individually, at every Sabah port including Kota Kinabalu. A one-tonne pickup and a three-tonne box lorry occupy wildly different amounts of deck, so a single published figure for "commercial vehicle" would be misleading. Send us the make, model, and the length, width and height, and you will get a real number back.

Excavators, cranes and other tracked or oversized units sit outside this table entirely — those are handled as heavy machinery shipping to Sabah.

Return and inter-Borneo legs

Shipping out of Sabah rather than into it, or moving a vehicle between Sabah and Sarawak, uses a different tariff. Return legs from Sandakan and Tawau are not published — ask our officer.

LCL sea cargo — RM per CBM

General goods travel as LCL: your consignment shares a container with other shippers and you pay for the volume you occupy, measured in cubic metres (CBM). Port Klang to Kota Kinabalu is RM 450 per CBM with a minimum billable volume of 1 CBM, so a half-cubic-metre consignment is still charged as one.

Our standard window is 10–14 days end to end, measured from a confirmed booking to collection at the destination port. These are calendar days, not working days — vessels sail to a calendar schedule, so counting weekends out would only mislead you.

That window covers, in order:

1. Booking confirmed and space held on a specific sailing.
2. Vehicle or cargo delivered to the yard, inspected and photographed.
3. Port cut-off, then loading at Northport or Westports.
4. The crossing to Sabah.
5. Discharge, documentation, and release to you at the destination port.

Notice how much of that is not the crossing. The single biggest variable is not distance — it is the gap between the day you book and the next suitable sailing. Book close to a departure and you catch it; book the day after one leaves and you wait for the next rotation. Everything leaves from Port Klang, loading at either Northport or Westports depending on the vessel. On the Sabah side there are three ports in our network.

⚖️Sea freight vs air freight to Sabah

Air freight to Kota Kinabalu exists and is quick, but it is priced by chargeable weight and no passenger aircraft will take your car. For anything heavy, bulky, or wheeled, sea is not merely the cheaper option — it is the only one.

The practical rule: if it fits in a courier box and you need it tomorrow, fly it. Everything else sails.

   Confirm and hold the slot

   The deposit is what actually reserves space on a named sailing. Until it lands, the date we quoted is not yet yours.

   Hand over and inspect

   Deliver to the yard or take door-to-door collection. Either way the vehicle is photographed and a condition report is issued before it goes anywhere.

   Track and collect

   We update you at loading, departure and arrival, and you can follow it yourself through tracking. Settle the balance and collect at the destination port, or take delivery to your address.

⚠️Risks and delays: what you should know

We would rather you heard this from us than discovered it on the day. None of these are common, but all of them are real.

• 🌧️ Weather. The northeast monsoon runs roughly November to February and rough seas can hold a vessel in port. When that happens the sailing moves, because the alternative is worse.
• 📅 Missing the sailing. Arrive after the port cut-off and the vehicle waits for the next rotation. This is the most frequent cause of a shipment landing at the far end of the 10–14 days window.
• 📄 Incomplete paperwork. A bank release letter for a financed vehicle takes days to obtain. Requested after booking instead of before, it can hold the vehicle in the yard through an otherwise available slot.
• 🔁 Transhipment to the east coast. Sandakan and Tawau legs may route via another port rather than sailing direct, which adds handling and schedule dependency.
• 🏗️ Port congestion. Peak periods slow discharge and release at both ends.
• 🛡️ Damage and claims. RORO decks are open, and handling damage — however rare — is a real risk on any sea move. Inspect against the condition-report photos at collection and raise anything you find immediately; late reports are very difficult to substantiate. • 📦 Items left in the vehicle. Loose belongings are not covered, may be removed at the port, and can delay the loading inspection.
